Meyers Rescue Ranch

Meyers Rescue Ranch, Inc., is a 501 (c)3 nonprofit animal rescue currently located in Arcata, CA. It is our hope to raise money for the purchase of a property where we are able to take on more animals for short and long terms. We also help other rescues work together for our common goals of community education and animal welfare. We are so grateful for the support we have received thus far and look forward to building a sustainable rescue ranch where we can educate humans and be a safe haven for all species. A very thanks to Karla Rivas Photography for donating her service to our cause. If you feel inclined to make a tax-deductible donation, please contact us or watch for our logo on Rescue Roasts organic fair trade coffee soon.

    Cleopatra and her kittens

Mama cat, Cleopatra, and her kittens came to MRR are a few weeks ago. We estimate the kittens to be approximately 4 weeks old at the time of the photoshoot. Karla Rivas has been kind enough to help us document their journey with us until adoption. Cleo's owners didn't want her anymore when they found she was accidentally pregnant by their unneutered male cat. She and her babies were discarded. A good Samaritan picked them up & contacted us for assistance. A gentle reminder to always spay and neuter your pets.

  • Feral Cats

    Feral Cats

Given their spicy nature, we went with a theme that seemed fitting for their names. We have Cayenne, Pepper, Siracha, and Mace. We had been working with some other good samaritans in Samoa to get a feral cat colony, of 25 cats, healthy enough to spay and neuter. These cats would have been trapped and released back to the colony where their lives would be cold, wet, hard, and significantly shorter. We only had the capacity for 5 so that's what we took. Our hope is to domesticate them enough so that they can live a life comfortably as barn cats on a nearby ranch. They love to snuggle, they just don't know it yet.

  • MRR only takes a dog on a case-by-case basis due to our limited space. This time we had extenuating circumstances. So, this pack got to hang with me for a week. Jack, my sidekick, is a Staffordshire terrier. We picked him up from a kill shelter in East LA 5 years ago. He is great, and a permanent resident. Sunshine, the older black pit, and her brother, Rio, a Plott hound mix, make appearances at the ranch when their dad is out of town. They love to accompany us to events like the Hoopa Ability Fair this April. We go to raise awareness about low-cost spay and neuter assistance available to rural communities. Of course, we also invite attendees to smooch a pooch or snuggle a kitten. Jack and Rio were stars at their kissing booth last year. However, this year the kittens may steal the show. Sassy, the small Heinz 57, lost her owner suddenly. He was a very special man and a friend. Sassy crashed with us until her extended family could come to take her to live with them in Colorado. She took to the circumstances surprisingly well and seemed very grateful when we said goodbye.
