Lifestyle: LA Woman.

Mexican American classic beauty is photographed in her family's early 20th Century home in South Los Angeles, California.

The neighborhood her home sits on today was once home to the wealthiest and most influential citizens starting the end of the 19th Century. As the rich moved westward, many of the mansions in the University Park (Now USC area) and Pico Union neighborhoods were converted to multi-family use structures.
Our neighborhood would be completely diversified by the 20th century, but not without racist housing practices that plagued the city at the time. Sure, every neighborhood has its own history, but what makes this place special is the location and our relationship to it. Our homes, where our parents chose to rent and then later purchase property, fall within a survey area called the, "North University Park Historic District," which stretches from Pico (a block from my mother's apartment) all the way down to 120th Street (Passed our high school, Manual Arts). This stretch of land, our old stomping grounds, is now registered to the National Register of Historic Places. There are well-preserved Victorian houses dating back as far as 1880, beautiful single-family homes dating back as far as 1910, and ancient commercial structures that are no longer in use but still give our streets character.
